The following letter sums up what running a small, remote lodge is all about.

Greetings to all:

My trip to Alaska was over a year in the making and was to be a trip of a lifetime. You hosted three generations of Gunns celebrating my father Bill's 70th birthday and my son Peter turning 12. But for me the ability to bring the three of us together for what was expected to be a magical trip at the hands of strangers with a promise to deliver us their very best effort was a dream come true.

In every aspect you exceeded our highest and demanding expectations. The service was with special care. The sensitivity to the fragile opportunity for three generations to have this time together to create lifelong memories was genuine and heartfelt. The scrambling to see that our off days were filled with last minute opportunities to see glaciers via an amazing inflatable kayaking trip and hiking Grace Ridge. The labor over the gourmet meals and the effort to get us on the very best fishing charters was so appreciated.

Clamming together, bear viewing, assisting us with exceptional accommodations while in Anchorage en route to Homer and of course the way you blended all the eclectic families at meal time, because of your special attention to and genuine passion for your guests our trip will be remembered as the most special time together in our lives.

I have already recommended you to all of my most important relationships and will insure that as I make plans for future travel, Alaska and your family are at the top of my list.

If ever we can be of service to you or your family in the Lower '48, please call on us. In the meantime, please keep us posted on your activities and wellbeing as we believe we have made lifelong friends with your family in Tutka Bay.

Our very best wishes to all of you and God bless.

Warmest personal regards,
Raymond W. Gunn

Quotes from several guidebooks recommending Tutka Bay Wilderness Lodge:

"Kayak, fish, harvest steamer clams and mussels, return the curious gaze of a sea otter swimming past, wave at a bald eagle swooping overhead, wander the beach in search of treasures to fill your pockets, ease your muscles with the sauna's penetrating heat, or simply snooze on the deck. And you may have read Gourmet magazine's sterling recommendation of the food that fills the table and the satisfied guests."

                                                          Alaska Best Places

"Tutka Bay Wilderness Lodge ranks as one of the finest wilderness lodges in Alaska."

                                                                        The Rough Guide to Alaska

"On pilings and on a narrow, grassy isthmus by the green water of the Tutka Bay fjord, this is an upscale hotel in the wilderness, with cabins connected by long boardwalks, a deck large enough for a helicopter to land on, and a kitchen capable of producing gourmet meals. It's quite a feat – the water system alone is a wonder. There's plenty to do: tide-pool and forest walks, bird-watching, hiking, berry picking, rowing, fishing from the dock and other activities around the lodge, and you can pay extra for guided fishing or kayaking, bear-viewing flights, and other outdoor experiences that go farther afield.

                                                                        Frommer's Alaska

"On a small cove 9 miles from the Homer Spit, this luxurious small resort is surrounded by Kachemak Bay State Park. The deluxe modern cabins have private baths and comfortable beds."

                                                                        Fodor's Alaska

"The lodge caters to nature lovers, bird watchers, and anglers with an appreciation for the finer things in life. Accommodations are luxurious, no roughing-it here."

                                                                        Moon Handbooks Alaska

"Roughing it doesn't get much cushier than this. But the reason to come here is not the indoors; guests come for the easy access to forests, islands, inlets and bays where sea otters play within inches of kayaks, and bald eagles soar overhead.
